All You Need to Know about Newborn Vaccination

Parents do everything to raise their children, healthy and safe, with vaccinations providing an effective way to keep various common diseases and health issues at bay. Many of these issues, if not dealt with through vaccination, may lead to permanent disabilities that can make the child dependent for their whole life. Immune system works as the first line of defence against diseases and it should be strengthened with vaccines. Continuing on the subject, in this blog post, we discuss all you need to know about your newborn’s vaccination. Read on.

How Vaccinates Work

Your immune system is responsible for detecting and responding against the antigens present in the body. Foreign elements such as chemicals, drugs or toxins can also be categorized as antigens. The main purpose of vaccines is to protect children from certain bacteria and viruses by stimulating their immune systems to generate antibodies. If a baby, post vaccination, is exposed to these microorganisms, their immune system is able to respond actively and effectively, protecting from the disease and reducing the severity of the possible effects.

Protection from Major Diseases

The immune system of newborns are not too strong at birth; it strengthens with age. That’s why vaccinations are required to artificially generate the required antibodies. With weaker immunity, newborns are at a high risk of a number of major diseases, such chickenpox, polio, rotavirus, measles, influenza and meningococcal. Vaccines provide your child with the much needed defense against these disorders.

Safe to Use

Before any vaccine is licensed, it undergoes rigorous examination and testing. Even after a vaccine is marked safe and rolled out in pharmacies, vaccine safety continues to be monitored. There might be a possibility of some side effects such as soreness at the injected area or mild fever due to vaccines, but they don’t last long and can be cured. Numerous researches and experimentation on vaccines goes on each day to minimize the possible side effects and making them even more safer.

Number of Visits Required

Hepatitis B should be given to the newborn just after the birth , while still in hospital and Flu shot should be given to the children over 6 months every year. Doctors recommends to give flu shot to the mother during pregnancy, as the flu shot does not work on babies less than 6 months age. There are 14 diseases your newborn can be protected from during the first 2 years by giving two to three doses of vaccination. At least five visits are required for the first 2 year for shots that could coincide with regular checkup visits.

Keeping Track of Shots

These days with advancement in medical domain, immunization records are maintained in a record-keeping system. These records can be accessed by the doctor  and you later in future. Even if you change the doctor, you can easily access it and get it in digital format. It’s advisable for you maintain the records at home too by keeping the personal record card provided by the doctors. Medical appointments are fruitful when you carry the baby’s record card with you. Record should be updated whenever your child gets a shot.
